Quarterly Review

My last blog post was about the resolutions I set for myself to accomplish during April, May, and June. One of my resolutions was to publish at least one blog post per week.

I failed.

I haven’t published a blog post since I posted my resolutions exactly 3 months ago today.

I’m sure you can guess how successfully I accomplished my other resolutions. If you guessed “Not At All”, you are correct.

If I have an employee who accomplished exactly zero toward their quarterly work goals, I would have to fire them. Sometimes I’d like to fire myself. But, as a boss, I can’t just pass out goals and never check back for three months. I have to check in, monitor progress, and provide support, adjustment, or correction all along the way. I’m a pretty good boss and my staff mostly achieves their goals. Not always, but often when the goal is not achieved, it’s because it was the wrong goal.

How can I be a good boss to myself? Well, I could check in on myself a little better. I have standing status meetings with my staff. Why can’t I do that for myself? Could I set aside some time daily to just check in with myself? Yeah. Yeah, I can do that.

Let’s try this again. I think I have the right goals, so I’m going to use the same resolutions as last quarter. The different this time is that over the next 3 months, I will also focus on being a good boss to myself.
